Composite is king

Weight watching, in addition to being on the agenda personally after too much work and too
little exercise, has been pervasive in the FG43 project. Composite is king in this respect.
By swapping out all of our bronze through hull fittings for composite ones, we saved almost
50 kg of weight in one shot! Another area that used to be built laboriously of steel, plywood
and solid GRP is the chainplate fastenings, which are now laminated into place with directional
fibres over foam core . Estimated weight savings: 13kg per side. Just by these 2 measures alone,
we shaved almost 80 kgs off the weight total. Dieting is fun!
PS. Personally I have not been as successful, substituting Divinycell and Airex instead of Muesli
doesn’t seem to do the job…
